Overcoming our national bias against commercial players in the human services/products industries is benefited by reflecting on our experiences in sectors where the for-profit enterprises dominate or should dominate.

Possibly the most important industry of all that provides human services and products is that of food. Americans thrive purchasing food from for-profit vendors. In rare instances non-profit stores have been in the business, but usually not for long because they couldn't compete.

With elderly relatives who have lived in various kinds of assisted living facilities- including nursing homes- I have observed that the for-profit venues generally have the best run facilities and are the most friendly as compared to non-profit alternatives.

In schools we usually think about the superiority of typical private schools- almost always non-profit- over the common public schools. For-profit schools, being so small in number, are not in the view of most people. But when they are, one almost always finds a school superior to the non-profit variety- especially when compared on an equal tuition basis.

Of course there is a place for charitable non-profit organizations. Such organizations' best role is that of raising donations and then redistributing the accumulated wealth to those in need. When such organizations provide services it is almost always well intended but often wasteful of their resources that could have been used to purchase the same services from efficient for-profit providers.
